SK Bukit Abal's Nilam Reading Competition Begins - Got Books?

It was bright and beautiful morning assembly at SK Bukit Abal (SKBA) on Sunday, 8th of March. Everyone was feeling quite chipper for the launch of the Nilam Reading Competition. The entire school was present to witness a spectacular reading event. This is the second year of Teacher Salmah's brainchild; however, she got all the teachers involved in this dazzling cross-curricular literacy happening.  Of course Teacher Suzana, Teacher Basirah and Teacher Hamizah made positive contributions. The mutuality mindset extended to the admin with the GB Mr Fadzilah, PK Ku Mr Mustapha, PK HEM Mr Rusdi and PK Ko Puan Rohana who have been main patrons of the programme.

The Nilam Book Competition is a national contest that requires a purchase of the Nilam book. The SKBA Nilam Reading Competition is an open event for all students with or without the book. The event is a platform to make reading fun and rewarding for everyone. Entry to the  lofty levels Gangsa (90-179), Perak (180-269) and Emas (270-359) levels, requires children to read anywhere from 90- 359 book titles. The students' ambitions are very impressive.

The event began with an uplifting doa by Ustaz Herman.  There was a prize giving ceremony.  And then the colourful attention grabbing helium balloons went up in the air, displaying a Nilam Reading Competition poster that unfurled below them. It marked the official beginning of this year's contest. When the balloons went up into the air, it was reminiscent of the kids classic film Up. The book baskets were entrusted to each class monitor by GB Mr Fadzilah in a ceremonious manner. One Mole Digging Hole is already creating a buzz in the basket of a lucky Year 1 class. The book baskets are meant to increase access to books in the classroom and each week they are refreshed with new titles.

The fancy shindig ended with the Nilam song. My hat's off to SK Bukit Abal and Teacher Salmah for making literacy fun! Coming Soon: Story Time, PAL Reading Party and Ramadan Reading Sessions.
