Top Of The Charts- The People Song

If you were around Selisng, Pasir Puteh in the month of March, it would be no surprise if you heard "The People Song". The song was introduced last year during a TPD session by mentor Sara Teale. It started out as just exercise to supplement the KSSR syllabus Chapter 4 Occupations. It quickly grew momentum, with repeat requests from students. The first school to rock it was SK Banggol Pa' Esah Teacher Mohasnizam's  Year 3 Class.  It started out with kids using flashcards of the occupations in the songs. Next, SK Padang Pa Amat's Teacher Zuraida's Year 3A and C classes couldn't get enough it.  Then during one of the numerous repeats, actions were assigned to all the occupations.

The actions stuck, it made it spread like a dance craze. At SK Panggong during a recess, some students from Teacher Ros, Teacher Zailina and Teacher Zuriana's classes crowded the LINUS room while singing and acting out the song numerous times. Teacher Salma and Teacher Suzana's classes were exposed to it on a Thursday before school holiday at SK Bukit Abal.  Teacher Hazura's Year 3 class started humming the tune at SK Kampong Berangan.

Don't think it's restricted to small children, even Teacher Rezwanee's Year 6 class enjoyed it during a break in the UPSR Clinic at SKBA. My favourite part is when the pupils shrug their shoulders and raise their palms upwards and sing,"Hey Brother, What's Going Down?" Beware, the tune is quite catchy.

Cross Country Race at SK Panggong

On your mark, get set, GO! It was a wonderful morning for a run on Thursday, 12th of March at SK Panggong. It was a great opportunity to mix with students and teachers in non-classroom environment, while applying English in a practical setting. My teachers were spread accross the spectrum of a rainbow's colours.. Teacher Zuriana Green Team, Teacher Zailina Yellow Team and Teacher Ros represented the Blue Team. GB Hj Saiduikhwan officiated the start of the race. PK Ku Puan Norashikin did a fine job making sure everything ran smoothly.

We spent the morning together at the finish line encouraging the students on the last leg of the race. The teachers were responsible for giving a ticket of placement to their respective teams as they crossed the finish line with the time recorded to determine the winning team. I also got a chance to take two rounds on a bike to keep the young runners motivated.

Year 1-4 had to run 2.5 km route. Phew! As they started to trickle in the Year 4-5 students were set loose on a 4 km route. In both year groups, girls started first with about a 15 minutes head start. Along the route that snaked around the village, there were scattered clusters of parents, relatives and onlookers as the tykes jogged by.  Throughout the route there were checkpoints manned by teachers who would give a runner a rubberband around the wrist to verify their passing of the post. It was a safeguard from cheating: students taking shortcuts or assistance from over helpful siblings.  There was even a water statation to hydrate the young athletes.

As the morning progressed, the temparture continued to rise. As I mentioned, I was lucky enough to go around the circuit twice to cheer on the youngsters. Phrases like: "Run, you can do it", " Pump your arms", "Don't give up" and "Faster, faster, faster" were used commonly by us as we encountered the racers. It's important to note there were lots of high fives being exchanged between me and students. The day ended with Red clinching first, Yellow second,  Green third and Blue in last place. Yet, from my perspective, we were all victorious in having a fun, healthy time with some English exposure. It was fun day for all!

Sports Day at SK Kampong Berangan

Sports Day was a marvelous 2 day event at SK Kampong Berangan this week. I managed to pop in on the festivities before noon on Thursday, 12th of March  The games were in full swing.  The climax of the event, the relay races, were just about to begin when I arrived from SKP.  The field was bursting with colours and plastered with smiles.  Blue, Green, Red and Yellow teams all had decorated tents on one side of the field. On the other side of the field was a large tent for parents rooting their children on in the scorching midday sun.

The relay races were intense with the colour teams captains all rallying their runners in the high stakes final races of the day.  They had 4 relay races divided by lower or upper primary and determined by boys and girls. Some of the students displayed raw natural sporting talent on the track. All of the relay runners showed determination and gallant efforts.

This could be an end to a wonderful day, but the story does not stop here. I was invited to partake with the parents against the teachers in a tug-a-war finale. I kicked off my sandals and dug my heels in the soil. We had a great display of teamwork and were rewarded with victory.  It was so nice to be cheered on by T Kamaruddin, T Hazura, T Mazwan and T Rofia'ah. After our bout, there was final contest between mothers versus female teachers. It was a far more furios competion than the men's event. As the day drew to a close, Green Team was victorious. However, in my estimation, all teams were champions that day. GO SKKB!

SK Bukit Abal's Nilam Reading Competition Begins - Got Books?

It was bright and beautiful morning assembly at SK Bukit Abal (SKBA) on Sunday, 8th of March. Everyone was feeling quite chipper for the launch of the Nilam Reading Competition. The entire school was present to witness a spectacular reading event. This is the second year of Teacher Salmah's brainchild; however, she got all the teachers involved in this dazzling cross-curricular literacy happening.  Of course Teacher Suzana, Teacher Basirah and Teacher Hamizah made positive contributions. The mutuality mindset extended to the admin with the GB Mr Fadzilah, PK Ku Mr Mustapha, PK HEM Mr Rusdi and PK Ko Puan Rohana who have been main patrons of the programme.

The Nilam Book Competition is a national contest that requires a purchase of the Nilam book. The SKBA Nilam Reading Competition is an open event for all students with or without the book. The event is a platform to make reading fun and rewarding for everyone. Entry to the  lofty levels Gangsa (90-179), Perak (180-269) and Emas (270-359) levels, requires children to read anywhere from 90- 359 book titles. The students' ambitions are very impressive.

The event began with an uplifting doa by Ustaz Herman.  There was a prize giving ceremony.  And then the colourful attention grabbing helium balloons went up in the air, displaying a Nilam Reading Competition poster that unfurled below them. It marked the official beginning of this year's contest. When the balloons went up into the air, it was reminiscent of the kids classic film Up. The book baskets were entrusted to each class monitor by GB Mr Fadzilah in a ceremonious manner. One Mole Digging Hole is already creating a buzz in the basket of a lucky Year 1 class. The book baskets are meant to increase access to books in the classroom and each week they are refreshed with new titles.

The fancy shindig ended with the Nilam song. My hat's off to SK Bukit Abal and Teacher Salmah for making literacy fun! Coming Soon: Story Time, PAL Reading Party and Ramadan Reading Sessions.

Bachok Funfair at PPD Bachok

Hi everyone,

We had an English Funfair in Bachok PPD at the end of February.  Five Year 2 pupils from each of the 34 schools in Bachok District and 1 English teacher from each were invited to participate in the English Funfair.  Many of the Kelantan TELL2 mentors, including the project manager, Tobin Walrod, pitched in to help out with the event.

The funfair was successful with all the pupils enjoying the English games thoroughly.

It could not be done without the cooperation of the local PPD office and the excellent performances of the teachers and mentors .

Here are some of the wonderful photos taken by Achama :)
