SK Bukit Abal's KM1M Programme

As mentioned in the previous post, Thursday 23rd of April was Kem Mebaca 1 Malaysia (Reading Camp 1 Malaysia). School children throughout the country, in both primary and secondary schools read silently from 10am -10:10am.  At SKBA, they took advantage of the literacy event to boost the school's Nilam Book Contest. Moreover, Teacher Salmah designed this event to instil the love of reading. It was a bright sunshiny day outside the Dewan when all the Phase 1 (Yr1-3) students gathered at 9:50am as books were distributed to every student. PK HEM Mr Rusdi and PK Ko Puan Rohana were present to support the event. There was an assortment of English and BM titles distributed to the budding readers.

At 10am, everyone was reading their respective books. I passed the time reading one of my favourite phonics titles, One Mole Digging Hole.  The last minute of KM1M was not so silent as my neighbours started reading my book in unison. When the clock hit 10:10am, the bibliophile bonanza started to climb into full swing. As the books were collected, we continued to read in a group. With a lcd projector and some graded readers, the students roared through a reading out loud session of some  phonic friendly English stories. T. Siti Basirah was a big help throughout the event. Many teachers who passed by, were pleasantly surprised at the fluency and enthusiasm of the crowd.

We read Hip and Hop, which focuses on Sound Pattern-h and it also includes Sight Words: see, have, a and with. Next we ripped into, Hop and Stop. This story concentrated on Sound Pattern-op
Sight Words: wants, to, the and a.  All the stories are brilliantly illustrated. Moreover, we usually assigned actions to verbs, to help the kinaesthetic learners. The final story was the apple of my eye, Bob Is A Bat. This is a fun read, with lots of alliteration. The target Sound Pattern-b and 
Sight words: this, is, yes, and, go and no.  

We watched a fun cartoon called, "The Girl Who Hated Books". It was about a girl whose parents love to read; however, their daughter does not share their interest. A stack of books fall and all the characters come spilling out.  They will not return to their book unless she reads it. As a result, she expands her mind and develops the love of reading.  Then, all the students stood and we sang the "LAGU NILAM" twice. The finale was T. Hamizah presented cool book markers for every student to receive.  It was a top notch Literacy Event!

Preparing For KM1M 23/4, One Malaysia Reading

It was announced this week, that all schools in Malaysia will read at the same time to promote literacy. The event is called Kem Membaca Satu Malaysia (KM1M), roughly translated One Malaysia Reading. Both primary (SK) and high schools (SMK) will participate in the national literacy event. On Thursday, 23rd of April, from 10am - 10:10 am all students and teachers in Kelantan must be involved in a reading activity. There are no other guidelines, therefore each school can customise their literacy event to fit the needs of their local population.

At SK Panggong, they have decided to promote reading in three languages: Arabic, BM and English. The teachers selected three students to lead the school in the reading activity.  The teachers selected to read chapter 96 (Iqra) from the Quran. Teacher Ros, Teacher Zailina and Teacher Zuriana worked diligently today to train Hazura, Fatihah and Ayuni to lead the school in a trilingual reading event.
Look at how talented these kids are, they can read roman script in BM and English. Hold onto your hats, they can also read the Quran in Arabic script.

Today we trained girls to perfect their tajwid in Arabic and their pronunciation in English. The girls had to conquer some big words like: Cherisher, congealed, self-sufficient, forelock, transgress and righteousness.  The girls practiced several times, improving their annunciation. They were also able make their "t" and "d" in the terminal position of the word crisp.  The girls were practicing tone inflection with question marks and emphasis with exclamation marks. The students and teachers did a great job getting show ready for tomorrows event. I'm sure it will be a smashing success!
